dennis tomkins “optic nerve”
in the artist’s own words, “making art for me is an act with mysterious consequences. i think of my work as related to landscape but not in a literal sense. i often use the horizon line as a tool to lead me, and hopefully the viewer, down a path to the place that connects the two worlds — reality and abstraction; the here and there, where alongside the visual reality exists a world of mystery and sense of the unknown.”

john roach and käthe wenzel “robo-improvisation arena”
“have you ever controlled a robot or conducted an orchestra?” artists john roach and käthe wenzel say, “you can do both in one go!” their “robo-improvisation arena” at space on dobbin turns the gallery into a “collective art coliseum.” the audience activates five remote-controlled robots, or “artbots,” designed by Berlin artist käthe wenzel. bearing charged brushes and such heraldic names as “pablo, hellraiser off canvas,” “fightin’ gal frida,” and “andy popsicle,” the artbots move around the 8 foot-square arena. as they pass magnetic fields in the installation, designed by sound artist john roach, they trigger colored lights and signal musicians to improvise. the musicians must follow the artbots’ painted marks like an evolving graphic score.

Janice Mauro & Joanne Pagano Weber “The Tidal Decade”
The Tidal Decade and it’s aftermath. Familiar words to us in 9062. It is impossible for us to imagine a time more horrific – when every minute posed a threat, natural or manmade, when the very survival of the species was at stake. Yet in this hellish world of danger and privation, in the remote mountaintop caves above the floodwaters, our ancestors not only endured, they created art. THE TIDAL DECADE is concurrently on view at The Private Collection of Mssss. Venoxia Bulbos-Bulbos at The Silvermine Guild, New Canaan, Connecticut (www.silvermineart.org/gallery). Melanie Bonajo “Captive Lives Western Spectacle”
In this exhibition, Dutch artist Melanie Bonajo explores the inhuman characteristics of relationships and prejudices among humans and animals. She investigates the affinity and association between the human and animal worlds – the proximity and expanse between their realms, and potential outcomes of a great imbalance of power. In Bonajo’s future forecast, long-gone animals will start to re-appear in people’s lives as ghosts. Their spirits will be revived at night in dreams. Due to an increased sense of loss, people will sanctify animals in the future like that of pre-modern animistic believers. Through technological means of instant and invisible communication through space and time, humans will try to cross ancient animal territories to heal the past. For this presentation, Bonajo’s lightbox images, video and installations depict vignettes of human attempts at animal healing and the merging of man and machine.Captive Lives Western Spectacle warns of a future in which mammals no longer exist and have permanently moved their existence into the sphere of archetypes. Gallery hours: Wednesday-Saturday 12-5 pm. On view through October 31.

Rusel Parish “Cult of Michael Jackson”
This exhibition presents the life of Michael Jackson from childhood to present and has been a focus for Parish over the last three years. Continuing societies endless fascination with MJ, this work does not judge the addiction but tries to understand its complexities. Presented in a chapel-like format, the work brings together pop expressionism with religious iconography and is a study of how media and cultural obsession can meet in a powerful way, multiplying images and ideas globally. This exhibition was not created nor altered around Jackson’s recent death but had been scheduled earlier this year to coincide with Jackson’s fall kick-off tour. With this shocking turn of events, the exhibition now presents a range of emotions from celebration to sadness. Gallery hours: Friday-Sunday 1-6 pm. On view through November 1.

Stephen Mallon “Brace For Impact: the aftermath of flight 1549″
Front Room Gallery is pleased to present Stephen Mallon’s “Brace For Impact: the aftermath of flight 1549.” It is very difficult to encapsulate the events that happened during and following the crash of flight 1549, but Stephen Mallon’s large-scale photographs, taken during the salvage of the fuselage and engine, impart a physicality and scale to these incomprehensible occurrences. Mallon’s photos present us with the aftermath of this disaster and remind us how it was averted despite nearly unbeatable odds through the mastery and bravery of the pilot and crew. Gallery hours: Friday-Sunday, 1-6 pm. On view through October 11.
The Front Room Banner Project—The Banner Project returns this fall with a project conceived by the London design team of Kevin Green, Frances Reynolds and Ned Scott. “Pathologically Optimistic” featuring Tom Billings, Andrés García-Peña, and Michael Krynski
A group exhibition of mixed media paintings. Tom Billing’s paintings incorporate items found on the street, such as discarded canvases, printed matter, orphaned signs and symbols. Using of metaphor, Tom comments on our social-political climate with comical relief. Andrés García-Peña’s vibrant paintings portray an ideal bull heaven where angel-winged bulls finally take revenge on the matador. They are seen drinking, smoking and cheering the attacking bull in a manner typical of the modern day arena bullfights. Michael Krynski’s work captures the transient nature of our world and explores the effects that our current information technology era, politics and the environment have upon us. Eric LoPresti “Fade”
The works in Fade are predominated by the soft colors of the desert steppe — grays, ochres, pinks and dark blues. In contrast, the imagery is dramatic in scope and subject, including vast aerial views of fractured desert landscapes, nuclear test sites in Nevada, and explosions from undisclosed arid locations, many of which are based on photographs LoPresti took himself from the windows of chartered planes. LoPresti’s work is about conflict. The works in Fade investigate the traumatic side effects of contemporary war through landscapes that are the sites of weapons tests, reactors, and munitions dumps. Building off of his previous diptychs which juxtaposed sites of violent conflict with colored gradient fields, LoPresti’s new works convey a post-cold-war zeitgeist with a confident hand and genuine devotion to the aesthetics of the austere. The new works seamlessly incorporates landscapes and gradients, opening up contemplative possibilities and heightening the effect of the vast spaces they depict. Rather than polemicize, LoPresti’s works provide space to encounter the drama and vastness of forces both within and beyond human control. Gallery hours: Monday, Wednesday-Sunday 12-7 pm. On view through October 11.

“PLAN B”
Featuring Double A Projects, F.E.A.S.T., K.I.D.S. and Secret School, Jess Levey,OurGoods, Lynne Pidel, Mark Stafford and Tattfoo Tan. PLAN B is an investigation of the emerging artist response to the current economic crisis. Originating from a quasi-anthropological premise, the project began as a survey circulated to dozens of artists about the impact of the recession on their work. As creative professionals who have historically adapted to adverse economic conditions, the artists provided truly insightful feedback. The reconnaissance effort continued with a series of studio visits, conversations and recommendations that ultimately revealed the artists’ propensity to harness the moment’s regenerative potential by proposing new personal, social and economic realities through their work. PLAN B’s findings will be unveiled at the opening reception. On display will be alternative commercial structures, documentations of unique gatherings and online exchanges, gardens, installations, and paintings. Workshops and “crafternoons” will take place throughout the run of the exhibition. Gallery hours: Friday-Sunday 12-6 pm. On view through October 24.

Jane Fine “Glad All Over
Pierogi is pleased to present a fourth exhibition of paintings and works on paper by Jane Fine. The paintings in this exhibition incorporate a mash-up of techniques—multi-colored pools of acrylic paint, passages of exuberant brushwork, jiggly drawn lines, and areas of high-key flat color. Fine once again allows a variety of improvisatory painting styles to bump against each other, while retaining their individual flavor. Fine’s new paintings, with titles like “Happy Island” and “Blockbuster,” are celebratory. They unfold in wide-open spaces, full of verdant landscape and flowery psychedelia. But this celebration isn’t just for youngsters, it’s a mature party room complete with bandages and blubber, patches and scars. Gallery hours: Tuesday-Sunday 11-6. On view through October 11.
