“Shock therapy is an attempt to regain control. while everything may seem to be spiraling towards disaster, there are methods to shock it all back in place. Over the years the term has been used to describe methods of medical, financial, and economic rebound, as well as psychological molding. As we see it, Shock Therapy through art is a way to Instill upon others an instant sense of our passion and our desire to create. But also a way to overcome any subconscious hang-ups, to let go and be released from mental confines. A way to control the chaos, while still pushing the envelope. Shocking ourselves and the viewers straight and askew in tandem with a visual onslaught, so that they may see as we do the perplex, all encompassing world we live in.”

Eyelevel and Outlier will both be hosting a daytime reception for Liubo Borissov’s Crowdsource,
and the welcoming of a special garment by Outlier Tailored Performance to be released in June.
CROWDSOURCE
A solo show with Liubo Borissov
Our lives are constantly watched by machines. Sometimes we take part in this show willingly, sometimes there is a human face on the other end, but more often than not we perform solely for the entertainment of databases voyeuristically collecting bits of our souls. This is the medium from which the works presented in Crowdsource are made — the electronic trails left by unsuspecting participants.
About Liubo
Liubo Borissov a multimedia artist that lives and work in New York. In his works, he explores the interface between art, science and technology. Liubo is an associate professor at Pratt Institute’s Department of Digital Arts. He received baccalaureate degrees in Mathematics and Physics from Caltech and a doctorate in Physics from Columbia, where he also studied electro-acoustic music at the Columbia University Computer Music Center. He holds a masters in Interactive Telecommunications from NYU’s Tisch School, where he was a Global Vilar Fellow in the performing arts. He has taught at Harvestworks, Parsons School of Design and the Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation.

Live footage is a Brooklyn based electronic duo consisting of Topu Lyo and Mike Thies. Topu plays cello incorporating the use of live loops and a bunch of electronics with no pre-recorded samples of any kind. Mike plays drums and keyboards often looping as well. They have been playing together for about 3 years now, but only since November 2008 has Live Footage actually become a band. The name derives from the numerous suggestions that their sound is “cinematic”, and the lively use of their feet for effects pedals.

and energy of New York City with steadfast manufacturing traditions and a stylish modern twist.

Amanda Dow Thompson’s graphite and charcoal drawings.
The public is invited to attend this event and visit the gallery during regular hours, Wed – Frit 11 am – 6 pm, Sat & Sun 12 – 6 pm and Mon 9 am to 5 pm.
Frozen and Filtered | Sonjie Feliciano Solomon
“Frozen and Filtered” will feature Ms. Feliciano Solomon’s ethereal organza sculptures, mirrored wall pieces, and enamel paintings. The
organza constructions, which are the centerpiece of the exhibition, integrate mathematical principles and artistic insight. These delicate
wonders, designed to collapse into small packages, create an atmosphere of calm and tranquility by capturing and diffusing light, and
appear to defy gravity. All of her work is inspired by natural elements and fleeting events, such as sunlight breaking through clouds, fog
rolling over hills and reflections on water, but fabricated using man-made materials and computer-aided design. Sonjie isolates and
simulates natural phenomena and recreates the universal feeling of wonder on a very basic level.
In.
Phantasm/ Amanda Dow Thomspon
Phantasm Amanda Dow Thompson continues to explore the relationship between reality and illusion. Playing with the
contradictory themes of identity, individuality and conformance, the drawings reference transient, translucent marks first made by solid
objects. Glimpses that flicker, spin and dissolve, whisper or shriek according to light, time and the viewer’s perspective. There is a sense of
metamorphosis; as pieces which start as replication, spare and unadorned, begin to flesh out in layer, abundance and color. With
obsessive repetition, and as the lines between positive and negative blur, drawings take on personalities of their own and are yet tied to
their original form. The pieces, hung together, begin to tell a story; each image a phase in the journey of the whole. The subject matter
appears to disintegrate, char, melt, freeze, or decay. But as the work struggles through the elements, it emerges, fresh, vibrant and
melodious, and one is reminded not only of vulnerability but also of resilience. The images breathe, sing and soar in a celebration of our
capacity for resourcefulness, for reinvention and for reviviscence.

Rob List Performances
JUNE 4 -27, 2010
Rob List with Melissa Cisneros, Diego Gil, Constance Neuenschwander, Olivia Reschovsky, Tjebbe Roelofs,
and David Weber-Krebs
Parker’s Box is delighted to announce a collaborative, interactive, performance project by Amsterdam-based artist, Rob List.
Rob List’s performance work has enjoyed a constant international presence since the early nineteen-eighties despite the fact that his practice has remained particularly difficult to categorize.
The work has often been seen as both primitive and minimal, in that in most of List’s works he actively seeks to avoid the “representation of human experience”, wanting instead to create a “source of it”. With this stated intention, while technically his pieces involve elements or suggestions of minimalist theater, dance and mime, his energy is primarily invested in a reflection on the relationship between forms and the space they inhabit. In this way, Rob List’s performances seek to engage the spectator in a direct experience of the space they are sharing with the performer(s), free of representation or narrative, and concentrating simply on stimulating our awareness of physical presence and the fact that “the world exists because of our perception.”

Ten Years Hunting – [Part Three]: The Trophy Room
JUNE 4 -27, 2010 in the Showroom
Celebrating our tenth anniversary, Parker’s Box presents the final exhibition of the three part series Ten Years Hunting.
Even before passing through the highly unpredictable mill of transformation that is the contemporary artist’s mind, the hunting trophy is one of the most eccentric of artifacts. In its simplest and most traditional incarnation, the head of a wild animal killed by a hunter, is stuffed and mounted on a shield as a celebration of the hunter’s prowess. On the one hand this age-old tradition, recording an activity with an “aesthetically” presented fragment of itself, could be seen to be close to certain conceptual art practices. On the other hand, preserving bits of dead animals, generally with their eyes fixed wide open in a parody of life, might seem to many to be quite a gruesome, even twisted activity that has little place in today’s supposedly eco-friendly context. This dichotomy made it seem to be of particular interest as a theme to throw out for artists to gnaw on. At the same time, it somehow also seemed to correspond to the attempts made by Parker’s Box since opening in the late Spring of 2000, to hunt down and exhibit challenging and inventive art-work that would hopefully surprise, delight and stimulate the spectator.

The Dan Peck Trio is comprised of Dan Peck (tuba, compositions), Tom Blancarte (double-bass), and Brian Osborne (percussion). Formed in 2008, the group focuses on improvisation and Dan’s compositions. The trio functions as a tuba-fronted ensemble, but there is equal emphasis on a blending together of the bass instruments, creating an atmosphere of dark frequencies. The sound of the Trio spans from landscapes of near-silence to massive and apocalyptic sound sculptures. Dan’s through-composed pieces for the group exploit the lowest possible sounds and harmonies on their instruments, and are heavily inspired by Doom metal.
Grasshopper is Jesse DeRosa and Josh Millrod’s behemoth answer to “jazz infused” experimental electronic music. Using trumpets, EVI, and a modest amount of electronics the duo warp classical and traditional instrument sound sources into otherworldly drones and peaking waves of pulsating electric mire. Grasshopper has shared stages with the likes of Graveyards, John Wiese, Noveller, Ducktails, Nonhorse, Ghost Moth, John Fell Ryan, Grey Skull, Theo Angell and Telecult Powers among others. The two have performed in classical ensembles across the U.S. as well as in Canada, Western Europe, Scandinavia, and Africa
While not obliging their duties with Sharks With Wings, running labels, doing radio, touring and releasing collections of found answering machine tapes, Marc Zajack & Michael Barker also perform as Drunk Decade. Using homemade / modified electronics and effects pedals, a circuit bent drum machine, a Monome controller, tapes, guitars and voice to create hyperkinetic ADHD infused music.
Krista Muir’s music is inspired by faraway places and people. Picking and strumming her baritone ukulele, Muir reflects the rich tradition of folk artists such as Joni Mitchell and Bobbie Gentry while being inspired by Greek Rembetika and French Chanson styles.

Wall Flowers, Grand Opening of new gallery space March 19th at 92 Wythe Ave. Sculptures by Norman Mooney, March 18 – April 14.
Opening: Friday March 19, 6-9 pm.
Wall Flowers marks Norman Mooney’s first adventures in color sculpture having previously worked only in grays, blacks and whites. Wallflower no. 1 measuring six feet in diameter is an explosion of pollen yellows. The piece consists of over 500 aluminum castings all projecting outward four feet off the wall. Another larger wall flower in crimson resin having a diameter of 6-7 feet will also be a part of the exhibition. While both sculptures quite literally reference the stamin of flowers, they also hint at the large scale of cosmic stars exploding into space or the microscopic growth of atomic particles.
In addition to the wall flowers, Mooney’s exhibition will include the three final windseeds from a group of six he has executed. The first three such sculptures are in the permanent collection of Richard and Helen DeVos in Michigan, founders of Amway International. While like the wall flowers executed in cast aluminum, these white eight foot diameter sculptures seem light enough to move in a breeze and have been liked to dandelion seeds among other natural objects.
In both styles of sculpture, Mooney is inspired by his larger experience of the natural world and his attempt to understand the joy, wonder and beauty one experiences when feeling the first rays of the sun on your face in the morning, the explosion of color bursting from a flower or the etherealness of seeds floating on the wind. Formally, Mooney hopes to challenge the viewer to evaluate their place in the natural world and to engage them in a larger intuited reality.

If you are looking for a good puzzle, from 7-9pm, Momenta Art will open ‘The Arbitrariness of Signs,’ a group exhibition of small and large works—paintings, sculptures, drawings, collages and other things, that pay homage to a moment in painting’s history when realism gave way to abstraction. The show will function as an experiment in content production, and is intended to be read as a word puzzle.

Parker’s Box presents ‘Unidentified Living Objects’ from 6-11pm, a show designed to question the soul behind a painting and other inanimate objects, and how they have a personality all of their own. A trip down a road that runs deep… an absolute must if you’ve been looking to indulge your intellect.

Later on at Pierogi’s project space The Boiler, Brian Conley will perform live with his work ‘Miniature War In Iraq… and no Afghanistan’ from 9-11pm. Distance and intimacy offer a range of perspectives toward viewing a work of art. Many times proposed intimacy can invite an uncomfortable response of distance from one party or another not wanting the responsibility intimacy needs. The works in this exhibition on one level or another engages distance and intimacy, while occasionally embodying both. In all of these works distance is what we have when we come to the work, intimacy is what we give to it by participating in it and internalizing it. All of this takes place in space, through the eyes, and in the mind.
The artists in this show deploy their visions within this field and bring to it a range of ideas about perception, meaning, content and form. This diversity is intended as is a challenge to a superficial grouping of appearances. ~M.M.

Like the Spice Gallery Presents:
Jason Bryant and David Mramor
featuring new work and new performance art!
Come join us on February 12th for this fantastic 2nd Friday event. Really, we’ll have everything. Upstairs you’ll be enjoying the work of Bennett Morris, the artist behind our current show, Climate Untamed. Take moment to mingle and check out the mix of painting, sculpture and photography that each of Bennett’s pieces has to offer.
Then it’s a short walk downstairs to see the new work of Jason Bryant. We’ve given you a taste of the new piece above, but we’re keeping the whole thing a secret you’ll have to discover in person. You’ll also get a chance to say hi to Jason in person, and maybe ask a few questions about his piece. And… dare we say it? Well, no, we don’t dare. We can’t commit to it just yet, but maybe, just maybe, we’ll have an extra surprise waiting for you as well…
But don’t think that’s all you’ll be getting. Upstairs, you’ll be able to enjoy perfomance art from Enid Allen, the alter-ego of artist David Mramor. Enid’s joined us once before (click here to check out our blog post about it) and it really brought the house down. If you were a fan of David’s recent show, you’ve got to be here.
